Let us introduce ourselves…
The best way to describe myself is as a Minimalist Adventurer. I pretty much exclusively wear black, swear too much and like Marmite have a tendency to be loved or hated exclusively. I’m 33 years old and everything I own fits into a 45l backpack and a day rucksack.
Mine is not a story of buying a house, marriage and kids.
I have been in £20,000 in debt, worked in a stressful, badly paid jobs and suffered from mental burnout. I have taken control of my life, become debt free and now run my own businesses, living a life I love.
I have created lots of free resources to help you do the same and also write weekly blog updates offering practical help, solutions and advice on creating a life you love through work, life and adventure
While I travel I have Clients for my Event & Business Consultancy. I have nearly 15 years experience in the Music and Live Events Industry and now provide coaching, website development, tech support and marketing advice. You can read more about how you can work with me while I travel here.
I also run Stag & Raven, a UK Tattoo Art brand with my best friend Kate. We work with over 60 UK Tattoo Artists and Creatives supporting and commissioning work to be sold in our Manchester Store and Online. We sell Art, Clothing and Accessories and it allows me to work while I travel.
In March 2017 my partner Phil and I left the UK to travel overland through eighteen countries to reach Bhutan on an Expedition we have called ‘Road To Happiness’. This trip is a Royal Geographical Society Expedition. We want to discover and document how we can make a happier world. You can read about that adventure here.
I started writing as a coping mechanism to get through the pain I felt after my Dad’s death in 2011. Over the last few years that has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone to embrace and lead a fulfilling live. I’m currently writing a book about my experiences, which will be on sale in November 2017.
And now for Phil…
Phil: I have wanted to see the world for a long long time. In primary school I wrote that I wanted to be a truck driver so I could travel, and as an adult I now work in a way that lets me explore the world as I like to best – working around the globe with people from all walks of life, of different cultures and different communities.
For me, the Road to Happiness is another case of the world falling into place around me. I never wanted to go ‘travelling’ as I imagine others do. I have no interest in setting up on The Beach or living the Club 18-30 life in South-East Asia. While I love beautiful architecture, and landscapes and mountains and beaches, my real interest lies in people. So, when Hannah first told me she wanted to do this trip, I instantly saw another opportunity to see the world the way I want to see it: through the people who inhabit it. It was already a journey that I was ready to make, and Hannah proved the ideal partner.
My job on the trip is to visually document our journey, giving voice to the people we meet, and conveying a sense of how they live.
The ‘Road to Happiness’ holds an obvious double meaning: we are setting out to discover and document what happiness means for different people around the world, and how we can share this knowledge; while at the same time we’re certain that this adventure will become a part of our road, our journey together, and hopefully one which will form a significant and positive part of our lives.
The name of this website is due to one of the last conversations Hannah had with her Dad in 2011. He told her not to get stuck in situations that made her unhappy – most of all to always keep remembering She deserved the best and to never settle.
