When planning this Expedition we found tons of useful websites. We know that we are not alone in searching for information so we have rounded up the most useful resources below to help you with your planning!
Airbnb: Travelling as a couple we have found that the cheapest accommodation is Airbnb. We have booked several apartments in advance of the trip as it is important for us to be able to work as we travel. We also like to live like a local when we travel and it allows us to eat at home a lot, which saves on our budget.
Google Maps: We have used google maps to plan our trip as well as create our Expedition Map.
Lonely Planet: This has been our one stop shop to get an idea about how long we want to spend at each point on the route, as well as allow us to budget and plan for other areas of the trip.
The Man in Seat 61: This is the best train travel resource in the world. Not only do you get up to date information on routes, but also prices, times and even what the train carriages look like and the facilities.
Rome To Rio: This is great for anyone travelling across different countries as the site shows you for free how to get anywhere by train, plane, bus, ferry or car. It also gives you prices and journey times for each to help you decide the best way for your trip.
Sky Scanner: This is the go to website to discover cheap flights. We plan to not use any air travel on this trip but thought it was worth a mention for anyone planning a long haul journey.
Trello: This is a free online software to allow people to organise and managing various projects. We have used this for this trip and Hannah also uses it for all her business projects. It’s a great way to collate information as an individual or part of a team. You can create to-do lists and link to other software like Google Drive, iCalendar, Dropbox and weblinks. It has been really helpful in organising this Expedition.
Travel Saving Tips: Travelling the world on a budget doesn’t mean you have to scrimp and save. If you are careful and clever with your money, you really will be able to travel for longer on less. It isn’t always easy, but there are heaps of ways you can catch a bargain when travelling. These tips over at Compare Insurance are both useful and helpful!
Action For Happiness: Action for Happiness is a movement of people committed to building a happier and more caring society. We want to see a fundamentally different way of life – where people care less about what they can get just for themselves and more about the happiness of others.
Escape The City: This is a global community. A movement of people who believe that life’s too short to do work that doesn’t matter to you. And that doing something different is possible.
The Minimalists: Hannah describes herself as a Minimalist – in fact apart from a suitcase of business paperwork at her Mums, everything she owns fits into a 40L backpack and her Fjallraven rucksack. Minimalism focuses on the importance of people not things. This website is an inspiring blog by two Minimalists, Ryan and Josh.
Royal Geographical Society: Hannah is a member of the RGS and the Expedition is part of the 2017 database. As a member you have access to the online resources and archives of the society. In addition there are regular free member talks at the society for by incredible Adventurers.
The Yes Tribe: This is a a non-profit social enterprise run by volunteers who like to help nudge people towards their potential. They build and create events, places, spaces and situations that help people, ideas and mindsets blossom. A lovely, creative inspiring community we are proud to be part of.
WWOOF Denmark: WWOOF is an exchange programme. In return for volunteer help, WWOOF hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles. We joined WWOOF Denmark and are helping out at a Dairy Farm for two weeks. (There is a joining fee to this website – but the opportunities are free to apply for and allow you to gain experience plus have free food and accommodation for your stay)
